SONIC INTERACTION DESIGN
Interactive Sound in Everyday Life
I've just written an online chapter (with code) explaining how to implement simple program sonification in Java. It uses a mix of speech synthesis, note generation, and audio clips while tracing a program's execution.
You can find the chapter at my Killer Game Programming in Java website:

It's chapter "Java Art Chapter 5. Program Sonification" which is about half way down the page.
Comments are appreciated.

To all list members,
Dear friends,
I have been studying the ripple patterns on seashores, both static, recorded in the inter-tidal sands and dynamic, observed as drainage water flows across the sands as the tide goes out.
These remarkable static and dynamic patterns suggest 'sounds' but engraved in sand within a non-audible visual domain. So is it possible to 'sonify' the visual data and create sounds directly related to the patterns?

Submission Deadline: OCTOBER 3
The 6th annual APCAM will be held just prior to the Annual Meeting of the Psychonomic Society. The goal of APCAM is to bring together researchers from various theoretical perspectives to present focused research on auditory cognition, perception, and aurally guided action. APCAM is a unique meeting in its exclusive focus on the perceptual, cognitive, and behavioral aspects of audition.

Phil Kortum's book, HCI Beyond the GUI: Design for Haptic, Speech, Olfactory, and Other Nontraditional Interfaces (Interactive Technologies) has a chapter on Auditory Displays that is very good particularly for the new practitioner. You'll recognize several ICAD regulars in the author list too.
