This list of paper is not yet populated, but a good starting point is the special issue of the ACM Transactions on Applied Perception (TAP) journal Volume 2, Issue 4 (October 2005). The bibtex records of these 14 papers selected as milestones for ICAD are also available from the bibliography.

localization of synthetic binaural spatial audio
In the area of sound localization ability for free-field versus binaural rendering I find myself often returning to this classic article:
F. Wightman and D. Kistler. Headphone simulation of free-field listening. II: Psychophysical validation. The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 85:868, 1989.
Nick Mariette
A good article on how vision affects sound localization
De Gelder, Beatrice, and Jean Vroomen. “Perceptual Effects of Cross-Modal Stimulation:
Ventriloquism and the Freezing Phenomenon.” The Handbook of Multisensory
Processes. Ed. Gemma A. Calvert, Charles Spence and Barry E. Stein. Cambridge, MA : MIT Press, 2004. 141-152.
A good article for starting research in how non-auditory events can affect localization of sound. (The whole book the article is in is a pretty awesome resource)
Sonification for Exploratory Data Analysis
If you start with sonification you also might want to look into this:

overview article for sonifications in chemistry
For the more specific focus on sonification and chemical data,
I recommend the following overview article to start with:

Interactive Sonification
When I first read this:
Thomas Hermann, Andy Hunt, "Guest Editors' Introduction: An Introduction to Interactive Sonification," IEEE MultiMedia, vol. 12, no. 2, pp. 20-24, April/June, 2005
I found it extremely clear and comprehensive. It allows to gain a full insight into the topics of Interactive Sonification, unifying them and laying the foundations for a common language.

One of the Ten Papers to Start
Actually there are quite a lot papers to start with for people who want to get to know auditory display, especially papers from former ICAD conferences. I remember when I started my study, the first book I borrowed was the 1994 ICAD conference proceeding.
The paper listed below gives a general framework of auditory display which I though it's good for novice to understand the important considerations and stages invovled in sonification design.
Anderson, J. (2005). "Creating an Empirical Framework for Sonification Design", in 11th International Conference on Auditory Display (ICAD'05), Limerick, Ireland, pp. 393-397.
Suggestion for the list
Michael A. Nees and Bruce N. Walker, ICAD07
at the risk of stating the obvious...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sonification
Many articles on this subjects are on servers that require $$$, e.g.
http://portal.acm.org/citation.cfm?id=910376
http://links.jstor.org/sici?sici=0148-9267(199522)19%3A2%3C110%3AADSAAA%3E2.0.CO%3B2-F
Makes it tough for unaffiliated folks to get access. It would be great if these articles were made available here!
Suggestion for 10 papers to start list
Bruce N. Walker and Gregory Kramer. Ecological psychoacoustics and auditory displays: Hearing, grouping, and meaning making. John G. Neuhoff, editor Elsevier Academic Press.
Can't See Papers
I am unable to see any of the papers. Can anyone help?

I can not acces the papers either
I've created an account and logged in, but see only numbers 1 to 10: there are no links!
I'll repeat Brian's question: can anyone help?

soon...
there are no papers listed yet, but we hope to get around to add those soon. If you have suggestions, please dont hesitate to post them here.
